Appended below is Mops23m.sea.hqx, the 719kB archive that holds the
Mops manual files, by mikeh@kralizec.zeta.org.au, forwarded with his
permission --- the author's "Roadmap" to the manual says:
Before you dive into Mops, it will be most helpful if you have an
overview of the organization of this rather lengthy manual.
Mops was designed as both a serious Macintosh development
language and a language that beginning, casual programmers can learn
to access the powers of the Mac. This manual addresses both
audiences, and some in between.
The manual is divided into the following major parts:
INTRODUCTION
PART I. TUTORIAL
PART II. USING MOPS
PART III. PREDEFINED CLASSES
PART IV. THE MOPS GLOSSARY

We have a prototype for reading TidBITS (and any setext) on unix

Oguz Isikli, a graduate student at Bilkent University, wrote the
code. The parsing engine was ported from Easy View. User interface
was based on unix Gopher client.
The program is open for further development and we expect some

Subject: [*] america's cup qt moov #2 (loopable)
This is a quicktime movie capture with the VideoSpigot LC on an
LC III 4/160. It is of a 12-meter yacht coming over the crest
of a wave an crashing through another wave.
The begenning and end match well enough to loop it, so even
though it is short, you can loop it and run it as long as you
like.
It is stored in VideoSpigot Format, which has a much better
compression ratio than the standard Quicktime (at least according
to SuperMac). This means that you must have the VideoSpigot
extension installed in your system. Fortunately, The license
agreement has allowed me to include it in this archive, so
drag & drop, reboot and play!!

p.s. I'm told it looks really good in 24 bit video. 16 bit is quite good as
well, as far as I am concerned. 8 bit isn't too great. Size: 712k

This is a quicktime movie capture with the VideoSpigot LC on an
LC III 4/160. It is of 2 12-meter yachts crossing the finsh line,
and a cannon firing, signaling the end of the race.
It is stored in the standard Quicktime format, so you don't
need any special system modifications to watch it. It was compressed
with a low "quality" rating to save space, so the colors aren't
amazingly continuous.

Anyways, I received quite a few letters asking for the other fonts of

Read Me
Biblio+ is a shareware Filemaker Pro (version 1.3) database. It's main purpose
is to allow proper automatic generation of bibliographic references even when
certain components (eg publisher, year...) are omitted. Other than that, you
should find that Biblio+ is just about as powerful and usable as any other
`commercial' Bibliographic database/manager.
When exporting data, the FullRef field contains the full bibliographic
details. If the Harvard referencing convention is desired, the Year Inside
option should be chosen. The FullRef_Rtf fields contains the full details in
proper formats. Simply paste the output into the appropriate place in the
accompanying RtfTemplate file. Save it as another name and that file is now a
proper Rich-Text-Format (rtf) file.
Plea: If you feel that BIBLIO+ has some useful value, or use it for any
purpose, or want to encourage ME to improve BIBLIO+ and develop other
`affordable & useful' databases, PLEASE send me an international money order
cheque (or cash) made
payable to: Andrew Lee, for ANY amount that you find appropriate. If you pay
your shareware contribution, you will receive a PASSWORD to enable you to
MODIFY LAYOUTS and DELETE records. If you license the source code, you will be
able to create your own layouts etc... All suggestions for improvements are
welcomed.
Please do not distribute Biblio+ without all the original materials,
especially
this file. Biblio+ is not for commercial re-sale without my knowledge and
permission. Please inform me if you decide to place Biblio+ onto shareware

[I don't know whether this should go in a game directory, since its related

Bolo Finder v1.0.1 uses MacTCP to connect to Mike Ellis' Bolo Tracker and
list the currently known games in a normal Mac UI manner.
Since all Bolo Finder does is display the output of a TCP connection to
a specifiedf host/port, it might well be useful in other very different

of course, there is nothing more important than finding bolo games!
Bolo Finder is free.

Subject: [*] Internet Bolo Tracker
Internet BoloTracker v1.0 - DONT README
This Bolo Tracker is a simple hack to look for Bolo games across the
Internet.
When you can't find anyone locally, it's time to look for another game
somewhere
out there. Better than the previous (AppleTalk) Tracker, I have added
a little
more user interface to it (see feature list).
Features:
The list is grouped by game. Network visible players are listed under
their
games, and are displayed in collapsible outline format. The list can
be
sorted by map name or by start time.
Start time indicates whether a game is on a time delay or in
progress.
You can now see how many people are playing in a game, and how many
unclaimed bases and pillboxes there are before joining. There is also
a space indicating that this is a password protected, or locked,
game.
Selecting a the name of a player, or that IP number, selects the
information.
Now you can copy and paste the info directly into the Bolo Window.
Editable subnet lists make it easy to add a new bolo site to scan. If
you don't know what your subnet is, look in the prefs dialog for the
<Local Subnet>, and that should be set to your subnet address. Send
it to me to put it on the master list, or just post it to your
friends.
Subnets can be added with drag and drop of Tracker Prefs files or a
specially
formatted text file. Another way to load a file is to open the Subnet
Prefs
dialog, and option-click the Add button to get a Standard File
dialog.
Bolo Tracker is free to Bolo Addicts everywhere.
Even more thanx go to Stuart Cheshire for his programming prowess.

Hi archiver!
This is a small set of THINK Pascal 4 routines to handle floating windows
in a Pascal program.
A few days back I looked on several ftp sites for such code snippets. All I
found was a C library by Patrick Doane. I translated it to THINK Pascal
and I also made it much shorter and clearer (IMHO). Since there is no
Pascal source code out there, I thought I'd submit to the archives.
This code is public domain. Whoever finds it useful may use it.

REQUIRES System 7
Felix is a freeware replacement for drag'n dropping.
It's an extension that allows you, when double-clicking on a document, to
choose which application you want to use to open it. All you have to do is to
maintain the Control key down while double-clicking. You will then be
presented with a Standard File dialog prompting you for an application to
use.

Note that this driver can also be used with the original MouseStick I,

Well....getting this in under the wire required diching a lot of fun things
I had planned for this hack....unfortunately.
It is an MPW tool that you run with balloon help already turned on
and it animates the balloon icon when you have no balloons on the screen.
The drawing is very kosher, using CopyBits, and it just temporarily moves
the grayrgn to allow itself to draw in the menubar.
The lack of updating is an artifact that it is running as a tool and can't
have
MPW update its windows while LoonyHelp is running.
Have fun!

TIFFWindow is a shareware XCMD that displays TIFF image
files in a window under Hypercard. It understands 1, 2, 4, 8,
and 24-bit images, as well as compression. It computes
a custom palette when appropriate, so that, for instance,
24-bit images look good on 8-bit monitors. This version,
1.1, adds the ability to read CCITT Group 4 images, and a
more convenient zoom/pan interface.
TIFFWindow runs on any Mac that can run Hypercard 2,

I recommend AdrressBook3.61 from the info-mac archives.
It has a set of tools that enable you to import text files of addresses.
Its conversion tools make it easy to reformat the data.
I am not shure it can sort the output as you wish, but there are many
fields that can be used for your special needs.
The best thing about it is that it is ShareWare.
Oh, and if you don't like it you can export the data to another Mac
application.

My two cents, as requested by n-DWEM Bloom:
Yes, there is occasionally porn? material offered thru the networks,
but we don't have to look at them if we don't want to, just like porn
in bookstores, tv, etc.
I have seen NO denigratory replies or comments on this network based
solely on the sex of the correspondents. There has been plenty of

pretty funny if you are a bystander.
I see no reason for a separate I-M. We are all part of the human race

Not "internal" system software! It's the floppy disk set that they are
not including with the pb145. Rightly, they are assuming that many
buyers already have a set. Buying a computer that ONLY runs the latest
version is surely license enough to run it, so why figure the cost of
this duplication in the purchase price? One or 2 backups outta be enough.
I know I've ended up formatting a lot of old white disks...

When I first started netting, I had lots of problems de-funking the files
that I did download successfully. I learned about BinHex, Stuffit Expander

type: "end of file encountered", and I can't unBinHex the damn thing. What is
this End of File, how can I get rid of it, and all that. I really wanna
know.
So if anyone out there knows, please, don't spare me the gory details!

There is a simpler way. Along with your list of values for the pop-up,
also place in the "Auto-enter a value that is *data*" the value in your

I stand corrected about Vol I-IV (actually I-III). I feel
compelled to add that since I started executing my codes (not
written for general release) on a PB170+Sys 7, I have not opened
any volumes other than VI (with an occasional foray into IV/V).
For example, with QuickDraw, this may well be because most of the
basic calls / resources / routines / data types are already
provided in the "bare-boned app shell", or that Vol VI in addition
to 32-b ColorQD version 2, has a Graphics Overview chapter
summarizing the Graphics Data types, or that I am just indulging
in "number-crunching" without any regard for the niceties of a Mac
app (Mr. Gates, do you an opening for me? :) - take your pick.
For someone new to the Mac to understand what Graphics Overview
(in Vol VI) means really requires having to go all the way back to
Vol I. And yes, in order to write a full blown Mac app with
complete backward compatibility across systems and adherence to
all guidelines, you do need ALL 6 volumes.
A "quick-n-dirty-hack" for Sys 7/68030 can be (has been) done with
less (but don't try this at home by yourself with Vol IV kids :).

Hah! I didn't think it was something unique to our IIg! The newspaper I
worked on had a IIg with the same problem: one wavy print job every 200
print jobs or so. Maddening as anything, because it was so intermittant.
We took it to an Apple Tech center, where they stated that the problem
couldn't exist. The guy replaced the cable connecting the controller board
and the laser itself. No improvement. He then replaced the entire controller
board. No improvement. Running out of things to try, he replaced the entire
laser assembly. Problem solved.
Go figure.
As for the other problems, it sounds like you might have an old version of
the IIg with the original ROMs. If so, you can get a free ROM upgrade.
Hope this helps...

Arggh! Yes, it may work - however, it scribbles over a random chunk of
memory. Up to System 7.0.1, this memory was always a chunk of memory in
an area of init code that had already executed - under 7.1 it could be
anywhere, so it may work, or it may not.
Use it at your peril!

My thanks to all for their responses to my query RE: MacTCP1.1.1 .
There appears to be some misunderstanding about the status of the software
with respect to whether it is FTP-able or not, so let me tell you what I
was told by the Apple systems engineer who sent me on this quest:
MacTCP1.1.1 is available via FTP from a number of sites, and Apple does not
have a problem with that. The trick is in finding a site that has it. He had
suggested looking on sumex-aim or apple.com for starters (without specific
directories, who has time?)
The next revision of MacTCP will, however, only be available commercially
(i.e. NOT free).
Now, I'll grant you that a systems engineer is NOT a high paid corporate
lawyer for Apple. Whether he was making some assumptions, such as the
university already having a site license, I do not know. I do know that the
most recent version I can get from our telecomm. guys here is 1.0.1,
which will not do.
BTW - I tried to purchase the most recent version from APDA and Apple, but
got the most phenomenal runaraound of my life. No one I spoke to could locate
it, and all tried to sponge me off on some other channel. If someone has
actually found the retail channel that purports to sell it PLEASE let me
know - I've had a phone hanging from my ears for days.
Again, thanks for all the speedy responses!

The questions regarding MacTCP and where to get it must certainly be
a FAQ by now.....As a practical and economical matter, one of the
most convenient ways to purchase MacTCP is from your favourite
mail order house (look for advertisements in MacUser, MacWorld etc) for:
Communications Utilities from Abelbek Software
- includes MacTCP 1.1.1, FTP client application, a Telnet connection
tool, a time server & client + other utilities for serving serial port
devices to other users on the net.....too many possibilities to discuss
here. Also note that registration with Abelbek after purchase will
entitle you to upgrade notifications and special offers.
These are the same folks who author VersaTerm and VersaTerm PRO which
also bundle-in the Communications Utilities diskettes. So, you can
go three different routes according to your needs:
- just the Communications Utilities package
- Versaterm (version 4.6.3 last time I looked) - this is the best value IMO
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- Versaterm PRO (version 3.6.3 last time I looked) - for technical users
needing additional graphic terminal emulations
Of course you could also join APDA and order the MacTCP kit from them.
There are many other advantages to membership in APDA. In this case,
however, I recommend the popular mail order houses for MacTCP.

Bad call.
MS Word's menus are different for a reason -- they can be completely
reconfigured by the user. You can switch the key-equivalents. There
are a lot more commands available than there are menus to display them.
This is a great, great feature and it would be idiotic of them to remove
it, just to accomodate NOW Menus (which is largely redundant in MS Word,
anyway).
NOW Menus is a great product, but it is trying to fit in a niche. MS
Word already filled that niche, and it was allowing users to reconfigure
menus back in 1985, years before NOW Menus was even conceived. For all
we know, NOW may have gotten the idea of reconfiguable menus from MicroSoft.
(When I saw NOW Save, I was reminded of MS Word's auto-save feature, as
well.)

I remain sitting on the fence in the great Microsoft battle. I
still use Word 4.0 because I refuse to shell out $129 for an
update that I don't need (and probably don't want on a lowly Mac
SE), but I still rely on Word's capable table-editing. Which
brings me to my current trouble.
A Word document with a table won't print correctly on my spanking
new Stylewriter II. All the characters print, but just before
the table begins, lines start overprinting one another. The
result is a mess of illegibility. I've tried turning off all
extensions by holding down the shift key on startup (system 7)
and saving the Word file as RTF and reading it back in (standard
Microsoft support suggestion for any problem).
Does anyone else still use Word 4.0 and also print on a

Subject: Nisus, MicroSoft and MacWorld
Oh dear, here he goes again, you think. Well, I can't resist it, and
it'll give you some insight into the psychological roots of hostility
to MicroSoft that's been manifested on this list lately.
Jim Heid is a MacWorld columnist I've complained about before, for his
repeated denigration or ignoring of Nisus and unstinting MicroSoft
boosting. The new Macworld (August) has his last (thank god) How To/
Getting Started column, called "Macros and Scripting". Here Jim has a
problem: Word doesn't have macros, and Nisus has had them for a while.
So it looks like it's going to be difficult to boost Word and run down
Nisus this time. Jim's solution is *not to mention Nisus at all* and to
focus on the macroing features of 7 other programs with macros, including 2
>From you know who. So that solves half his problem, which was quite
severe. For the only program in his list which has all the features he checks
for is Excel. But Nisus has all those features too. Couldn't have a
table that shows another program at least as feature-rich as the MS
flagship.
But what about the other half of the problem, boosting the lumbering Word
in an article on capacities that Word doesn't have? Here's how Heid does it.
What can you use macros for? Part of Jim's answer goes like this: "Power-
house wordprocessors such as Microsoft Word have style-sheet features
that automate repetitive formatting....Most other programs don't have
these features, but you can simulate them with macros.." We need macros
to boost our otherwise enfeebled software to the level of the glorious
Word! (To be fair, the rest of Heid's answer is less silly.)
One reason MicroSoft enrages people is that its mammoth advertising
budgets buy it this kind of bias, whether conscious or unconscious,
tho' rationally, of course, it's the reviewer's fault. Meanwhile,
small companies with superior products struggle for recognition or
even survival, all to the detriment of the end-user.

Hey ! This key-combination is used by Apple's own SYSTEM (Finder)

I use this for years to switch between Hebrew & English scripts in the Hebrew

The most recent version of PM is 4.2, which can be upgraded to 5.0 when it
ships. Upgrade is free if 4.2 is purchased after January, 1993.
Educational pricing for PM is realistic, considering software budgets of
most universities. Five-packs are sold for $450 and include a concurrent
use license.
Students can purchase a text from Addison-Wesley: **Student
Edition of Aldus PageMaker, Version 4.0**, ISBN 0-201-58391-7, for $49.95
list. Instructors can request an "examination copy" free. The nice thing
about the text is that it includes the PM software, limited to 12 page
documents and no pantone colors.
PM 4.0 can open PM 3.0 documents from within PM. Old versions of PM can be
upgraded to 4.2 or 5.0. Call PM for details (800) 688-8800. It may be
cheaper to buy a new 5-pack.
Is it the best desktop publishing program? It is between Quark Xpress and
PageMaker. Looks to me like 5.0 is better than Quark. There is a PM 5.0
demo (non-functional) available on Sumex.

The short answer is that EV cannot recognize this particular

Subject: SIMMDOUBLER and SOFTSTEP?
Has anyone purchased the SOFTSTEP (I think that is the name)
Memory adapters? These devices allow 4 256K SIMMS to create
a single 1MB SIMM.
I am wondering if anyone has purchased the SIMMDOUBLER?
This allows 1MB SIMMS to create single 2MB SIMMS.
If anyone has purchased either or both of these products
I would like to hear from you with phone numbers of the
place the units were purchased at.
Goal is to re-use 16-256K simms with 8-1MB SIMMS to create a
12MB MAC II.
Thanks.

Subject: Software Requests
I was reading my lasst issue of MacWeek (the one that says Apple is putting
a 486 on a PDS board) and came across an article about the MacHack
contest. I was wondering if anyone with access to Ziffnet/Mac could
upload to Info-Mac the follow pieces of software (They are not exclusive
because it mentions that 'other on-line services' also carry them, but
I'd be the first to bet that the most likely Ziffnet/Mac will have them
first):
1) pLayer and AppBar by Donald Brown
2) SegaMac by Alex Rosenberg
Actually, one, a smoother screen updater has already been uploaded to
Info-Mac, but I can't remember the person who posted it. There are some
other included in the article that should also be posted, but most deal
with things that would not appeal to me personally, but I think they should
also be shared. If anyone knows of other MacHack participants that were
not mentioned in the article, would you be so kind as to post them for
all of us to enjoy? Thanks in advance...

Just got back from seeing the firm and although I didn't like the
screen version half as much as Grishams book....there were tons of M
acintosh's scattered throught the movie. In the Firm's office there
had to be a least 5 visual (LC's?) cpu's and I think I saw at least
two Powerbooks. Congrats to the producers of the Firm, at least they
did one thing right:-)

Subject: U.S. DoD Aquisition of Shareware S/W
Hello again!
There are a couple of shareware programs which I would like to purchase and
use
on my Macintosh at work. Does anyone out there who works for the US DoD or
other government agency have experience acquiring such software? I suppose
the easiest method would be if there is a commercial software distributer who
also sells shareware software.
Thanks for any guidance you can provide. Please reply directly and I'll
summarize for the net if there is sufficient interest.

MacTCP is commercial software and therefore will not be available on
the net.
Apple has just rewritten MacTCP. The new version is 2.0, and is
included in the "TCP/IP Connection for Macintosh" package.
You can purchase a copy from APDA for $59. Call 800-282-2732. (They
are backordered until the end of the week of July 5)

MacGrid v2.0.1 is a Minesweeper clone, so you all know the basic concepts
behind it!
v2.0.1 fixes a major bug in v2.0, so now it REALLY SHOULD run on older
Mac's that don't have color Quickdraw. I still cant truly test it, so if
anyone has problems, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
MacGrid requires System 7.

In response to Mike (mikeg@asylum.gsfc.nasa.gov):
there are a few guidelines you should follow for installation of
the 32-Bit System Enabler:
1. The 32-Bit System Enabler requires Macintosh System Software Version 7.1.
2. If you have a Macintosh II, then ensure that you have version 1.2 of the
ROMs or higher and a PMMU. These are available in the FDHD Drive Upgrade
kit.
3. Make sure that Mode32 is not installed.
4. If any of your drives was formatted by Drive7 from Casa Blanca Software,
contact them to see if an upgrade is required.
5. Run the system 7.1 compatibility checker to ensure that all of your
software is 32-Bit Clean.
6. If you are running ATM, make sure it is the latest version.
Hope these are helpful!

Contribution: MacClock 1.0
A couple of days ago I was looking through the archives in search for a
Macintosh equivalent for the UN*X xclock(1). Couldn't find it, and
therefore wrote one.
I've tried to keep the program small, with little memory requirements. It
is resizable, and remembers its position.
MacClock draws using an off-screen bitmap (for smoother graphics) if there
is enough memory available. So, if you want MacClock to have smooth
graphics for bigger window sizes, you'll have to give it more memory. If
there is not enough memory available MacClock won't use an off-screen
bitmap, but draw directly into its window.
If you encounter any problems with MacClock, please inform me. I've tried
it on a Quadra 900, and a IIcx and didn't find any problems.
If you feel this program ought to be shareware, please pay the shareware
fee of $5 (cash, per snail-mail). If you feel it ought to be freeware,
well so be it.

Fittingly Sew (tm) is a new and innovative Macintosh program for fitting
and designing clothing patterns. It will add pleasure and efficiency
to your sewing experience. If you adjust patterns for fit or to
achieve a specific style, this program is for you.
With the mere click of the mouse, you can:
* add fullness and pleats
* change the shapes of curves
* transfer darts
* lengthen or shorten pieces
* make facings
* create yokes
* do a whole host of other activities
In every instance, the seam allowance automatically readjusts itself
to the new shape.
Fittingly Sew Demo is set up as a self-extracting archive.
Double-click the Fittingly Sew Demo.sea icon. You will get the
Fittingly Sew Demo program and notes. The notes provide a
walk-through of the demo which will introduce you to many of the
capabilities of the Fittingly Sew program.
Ordering information is included in the notes.

-> Anyone know how to select a default entry from a pop-up list (field) in
-> FMP without writing a script. I'd be much obliged for any advice -
-> including the details of any script (just thought there might be a
-> simpler way).
In the Define Fields Options dialog, there is an option for auto-entering a
value that is data. Build your list in the pre-defined list. Then auto enter
the data (the default from the list) that you want. You can do both.

I just upgraded (?) to System 7.1. I can't seem to get MaxAppleZoom to
work under the new system. I got things down to the basics. I put System,
Finder, and MaxAppleZoom in a new folder. MaxAppleZoom (MAZ) works for
7.0.1, does not work for 7.1. Is there any way around this, or do I have
to go back to 7.0.1 or lose MAZ? I don't want to go without my larger screen,
but I already have my system files hosed up. :-(
